On August 29th we will be launching "Degei's Descendants: spirits, place and people in pre-Cession Fiji" by the late Dr Aubrey Parke (Terra Australis 41, ANU Press). Dr Parke finished this, his PhD, shortly before his death in 2007 in his eighty-second year. He was the second oldest person to be awarded a PhD degree by the ANU and was a long-time student in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology. "Degei's Descendants" covers the origin stories and evolving social hierarchies of Western Fiji, from information collected by Dr Parke as a colonial government official in the 1950s-60s and as an ANU student in the 1990s. The volume was edited by Prof. Matthew Spriggs (CASS) and Emeritus Professor Deryck Scarr (CAP) and includes an appreciation of Dr Parke's career by Prof. Spriggs as an introduction. The events will kick off at 3.30pm when the Centre for Archaeological Research (CAR) seminar will be given by Prof. Spriggs in Hedley Bull Theatre 2 on the topic "Aubrey Parke: NOT an 'enthusiastic amateur' in Fiji". There will then be a launch of the book at 5pm in the atrium of Hedley Bull, with an accompanying reception. Members of Aubrey's family will be in attendance and members of Canberra's Fijian and Rotuman community have also been invited.
